The Importance of Friends

For children, having friends and playing with friends is a daily way of life. Whether in the neighborhood or at school or on a team, children have more fun when they are with friends.

When attending camp, if a child has a friend to go with them, there is decreased anxiety and a better attitude to participate in camp activities. Its fun waking up knowing you will be spending time with friends in a place that provides a lot of fun activity. That feeling of “knowing” tends to build confidence and an increased feeling of security.

But also realize during your child’s United Sports camp experience, that there will be older “friends”, the counselors, who will also provide your child with a fun, welcoming and friendly environment. You will notice camp staff greeting everyone each morning.  Those smiling faces will tend to make you and your child feel welcome and help everyone start of each camp day with a friendly face.

And don’t forget, we offer a way for friends to come with campers. Every Tuesday through Friday is “Bring a Friend” day. Campers earn “friend” bucks for each friend they bring to camp. These friend bucks are then redeemed for prizes at the end of each day.

The Value of Summer Camp

When you think of the word "value" one immediately includes the dollar sign. This is true of all consumers and rightly so.

Many summer camps, including here at United Sports, maintain that attending camp is a great "value". Why?  Well, we provide a phenomenal product and keep your child busy for 7 full hours. Our goal is to teach skills, provide a safe environment and assist each camper's successful foray into the daily fun at summer camp. If your child has a great time and ends a week of camp very happy, then you the parent are happy especially when you look at how much you paid and what you and your child received in return for your investment.

Another more important concept of the word "value" however relates to the camp experience and how this adds value to the future of our campers which provides a foundation for being a successful adult.

Howard Gardner, in his book Five Minds for the Future talks about 5 minds that will need to be mastered in order to contribute and work in the future. They are: the disciplined mind, synthesizing mind, creating mind, respectful mind and ethical mind. All of these "minds" pertain to specific skills campers can improve while at summer camp. Disciplined mind to maintain focus, synthesizing mind gathers information to make good choices, creating mind asks questions and offers new ideas, respectful mind accepts others and their opinions and the ethical mind learns the difference between right and wrong.

Our goal at United Sports is to provide both a monetary value to our customers and to offer ways to make your child successful. Be it known, we are very "mind"ful of our duties and we will make every effort to provide these to your child.

The Importance of the Camp Tour

In order to set your child up for a successful summer, especially if it’s the first time a child is attending a summer camp, a tour of the camp facilities is a must.

The camp tour will not only allow you and your child to meet the camp director, but will also familiarize your child with the camp surroundings/environment.

The familiarization will diminish the anxiety a child may feel when emotionally preparing for the summer camp experience. When the time comes for that first day, that feeling of “knowing” what to expect tends to build confidence and an increased feeling of security.

During your United Sports camp experience, you will notice camp staff greeting you at each entrance to the facility. Those smiling faces will tend to make you and your child feel welcome and help everyone start of each camp day with a friendly face.

Summer Camp...A Great Place to Learn.

Summer Camp is a great place to learn.

At United Sports our campers will have the opportunity to learn new things and try new activities.

According to American Camp Association research, 74 percent of campers reported that they tried new activities at camp that they were afraid to do at first. And, those activities often leave lasting impressions. In the same survey, 63 percent of parents reported that their child continued new activities from camp after returning home.

And, the camp experience teaches more than just archery or a new sports skill. The entire experience is made of teachable moments, perhaps one of the biggest is how to live with a group of people. Campers learn to pick up after themselves, respect each other’s property, and to say “Please” and “Thank You.”

Our main focus here at United Sports echoes the above. Some of the activities at United Sports will be new for your camper. Whether its climbing the rock wall, playing a new sport or shooting an arrow, all of the experiences will take place in a safe and secure environment, all important aspects of making each child feel comfortable thereby making that learning experience more enjoyable.

In addition, our staff emphasizes and models the values of fair play, respect, honesty and sportsmanship. Campers will be aware of the importance of these values and reminded to make good decisions each day.

The combination of learning new skills and emphasis on good values makes summer camp at United Sports a truly exceptional experience.

Making Friends at Summer Camp

I am compelled to share an important moment from summer camp last year. It took place in the middle of the summer and was an answer to a question I posed to our Action Day Campers. I asked them, "who in camp has made a new friend this summer?" I have asked this question before and when I do I hope to see each camper raise their hand. But, you never really know what the response will be. Well, I was pleasantly rewarded with every child's hand raised. I say rewarded, not because of anything we purposely do at camp. My reward comes from the fact that each child felt that they actually did make a new friend at camp. That what we do here at United Sports in our camp setting is not only play, but teach the values of respect, honesty and sportsmanship. These are the true values of friendship and we do that well every year.

Why Choose United Sports Summer Camps

When is the right time to start thinking about summer camp?
This is as important a decision as any a parent will make especially because the decision involves the care of children.

The key factors that usually steer this decision include location of the camp, the camp program, staffing and how the camp fosters making friends and learning.

As you begin to assess where your child will go to camp this summer, lets take a look at each of these factors and why your child’s summer camp destination should be United Sports.

• Location - We are conveniently located just off business RT. 30 and only minutes from the 30 By-pass.

• Camp Program - A diverse program with a lot to offer for both the athlete and non-athlete – sports camps for the higher skilled players and those who just want to learn a little and play a lot, camps for boys and girls and ages from 3 to 15.

• Staffing - Our strongest asset as all of our staff have previous experience working with children and expertise in the area in which they work.

Upcoming Events:
Sunday, March 11 – Chester County Summer Camp Fair at United Sports 11:30am to 2:30pm includes free admission, door prizes, entertainment for children and a chance to visit with over 25 local summer camp programs to learn about what they have to offer.

Tours:
If you or someone you know are interested in taking a tour of our facility, feel free to contact me at mbernstein@unitedsports.net. We have a large building and we understand that it might be intimidating for a child coming to the facility for the first time. Tours are also a chance to ask questions about camp and become familiar with the policies of summer camp.

Birthday Cards:
Be on the lookout for your child’s birthday card. All campers under the age of 14 are sent birthday cards at the beginning of the month of their birthday. Each card includes 3 coupons to use at United Sports and they don’t expire until January 1, 2013.
